ECG installing 61 new transformers across the Western Region
The Western Region Office of the Electricity Company of Ghana is currently installing 61 new transformers across the region.
This is to cement the integrity of its networks and thereby guarantee uninterrupted power supply.
Currently, the company’s technical team have finished injecting new transformers at Sefwi Wiawso and Sefwi Bekwai.
According to the Western Region Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana Philip Osei Bonsu “plans are also underway to extend power to new communities”.
Even though the project is capital intensive, he said ECG will see to its logical conclusion to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
Mr. Osei Bonsu disclosed that, “ aside the installation of transformers the ECG is embarking on 16 major projects that is currently on going to improve the situation of power supply in the region… these are very capital intensive but we need to do it to give our customers quality service”.
He revealed majority of reported cases of cut in power supply in some districts are due to bamboo trees and other tree branches falling on the supply lines.
“Per our outage statistics a lot of outages are caused by bamboo trees interfering with our networks leading to the tripping of our lines because of the vegetative cover in the region. A lot of our lines pass through very thick forest so every now and then we embark on a massive bush clearing exercise across the length and breadth of the region to avert any power cuts caused by tress failing on our lines”
For example, from Tarkwa in the Tarkwa – Nsuaem Municipality to the last community in the Wassa East District is over 100 kilometers.
That stretch is thick forest and there are equally thick lines passing through and supplying power to thousands of residencies, companies, shops and other establishments.
“So, you can understand what a twitch on the line will do to power supply”.
Mr. Osei Bonsu indicated their best response, to the interference, is to undertake regular bush clearing exercises where they engage local hands.
“The good news is that we are creating jobs as we embark on this bush clearing exercise, so we make sure we deploy the local indigence in the bush clearing activity to create employment for the local guys”
“Already we have commissioned a new customer service center at Wassa Akropong, where we have also given out contracts for bush clearing, because it is one major issue. Recently they have had some intermittent power cuts as a result of bamboo interfering with our networks so we have given out the contract and we hope that in the next one month it will be done to steady the supply system”.
