SEKONDI GOES RED AS YOUTH DEMAND ENSTOOLMENT OF A CHIEF
A group calling itself Concern Citizens of Sekondi, in the
Western Region have embarked on a massive demonstration over
a protracted chieftaincy dispute in the traditional area which has
hampered the royal family from enstooling a chief for the town.
The demonstration is to mount pressure on city authorities and
the king makers of the Sekondi Traditional area to enstool a substantive chief
for Sekondi.
For close to fifteen years now the Sekondi Traditional area
has been without chief since the demise of the then paramount chief, Nana Awuah
Duku in May 17, 2003
As a result the group amidst brass band have been
demonstrating across the principal streets of the community.
As part of the demonstration the group will petition the
queen mother of the traditional area the Metropolitan Chief Executive, the
house of chiefs and the Regional Minister.
Speaking with the, Secretary to the group, Samuel Kodwo
Appah after the group had handed over their petition to the queen mother of Sekondi
said, the chieftaincy dispute and the
delay in enstooling a chief has retarded development in Sekondi.
He observed Sekondi is lacking and lagging behind economic
and social infrastructure, which he said has resulted in poor livelihood,
noting the youth are jobless.
“Our youths are
walking about aimlessly because all businesses have gone down and that is why
we
need a chief to manage the affairs of the town to revamp Sekondi”.
The Secretary said the group do not have any interest in any
of the factions aspiring to be chosen as a chief but they are willing to rally
behind anyone who emerges as the chief.
Nana Efuahema, Queen mother for Sekondi traditional area
upon receipt of the petition stated the royal family is very much concerned
about the situation and will do its utmost best to enstool a chief.
“The royal family has noticed the anger of the people of
Sekondi and with what we have seem we are not going to sit on our ores we are
going to see to it that the case which is currently pending at the Regional
House of chief will be trailed with dispatch to pave way for us to enstool a
chief for the Good people of Sekondi”.
The demonstrators, were however angry as they could not meet
any political head in the region to receive their petition. They could not meet
both the Western regional minister and his Deputy as well as the Mayor of the
Sekondi Takoradi metropolis Anthony K.K Sam when the group stormed the
assembly.
One of the members of the demonstrators who spoke with Skyy
news Stephen Cudjoe described the action of the political head as gross
disrespect to the good people of Sekondi.
“Our leaders do not have even an iota of respect for us the
native of Sekondi and I want to inform them that Sekondi is not for them. We have
been to the regional office and both the regional minister and the deputy were
not around to receive our petition and the Chief Executive Officer of this
metropolis too is not here to receive our petition…for their inform if they are
not going to receive our humble petition
they will hear from us and it is not going to be good” he fumed
