CRIMINALIZE SIDE SELLING OF RUBBERS - GREL CEO

Managing Director of the Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL), Lionel Barre is calling on government to as matter of urgency halt  private individuals from buying rubbers from farmers and exporting them in their raw state.

According to him this is causing government of Ghana to loose millions of foreign  exchange hence "government should immediately introduced policy to stop this nefarious activity and make it criminal ".

He made this revelation during the Second edition of media encounter which was yield at its Head Quarters in Takoradi  to educate journalists of it activities.

Ghana Rubber Estate Limited, a public-private initiative which deals in the production and  exports nearly 100% of its natural rubber produce abroad, raking in millions of foreign exchange.

Mode of Operation

Government of Ghana secures loans from Agriculture Development Bank and  National Investment Bank for farmers to invest in their rubber plantation. And by memorandum of understanding GREL is to buy the raw rubbers from farmers and deduct 20- 25 percent of the loan government granted them and process the raw rubbers for export.

Unfortunately most farmers are now selling their natural rubber to private individuals as a means of avoiding being deducted by GREL.

A process which Mr Barrie describes has cheating.

" These Individual are cheating...they are cheating farmers  because they are putting  them at a risk of  farmers loosing  their farms, and they are cheating banks and most of these banks who grant loans to these farmers are state banks so in effect they are stealing  from government  as they deprive the state of it foreign reserves"

He stated that, individuals  who purchase from farmers do not adhere to environmental  measures and their activities pollute the environment, “they pollute the water boadies and atmosphere with siroum without factoring the repercations it might have on the environment and Human Lifes.

Mr Barrie however is dismayed as some of these private individuals have obtain license to embark on such nefarious activity and they export the raw materials without paying taxes.

“ GREL pays tax to GRA and we pay all our customers duties... Surprisingly when these private individuals are exporting the rubbers in it raw state to China and Malaysia, they manage not to pay taxes and duties and l don't know how they are able to do it... We can't develop a nation like this, government should come in to halt these nefarious activity other than that there is a possibility of GREL beseeching the it contract with government to make it competitive” he fumed
