Ahanta West cries for good roads while benefitting from planting for food and jobs
Farmers
in Medinya in the Ahanta West District are applauding the government for the
planting for food and jobs initiative.
The
farmers are convinced they will now be able to have a market for their farm produce
that normally rots due to the unavailability of a ready market.
But
they also believe this laudable initiative of government will be meaningless if
roads leading to productive sectors are not looked at.
The
farmers say it will not be enough for government to concentrate only on the
food and forget about how the food will get to the people it is intended for.
In an extensive interview with some of the farmers, they reports that the area is abound in large expanse of arable land that can cultivate tonnes of cassava,
plantain, rubber, palm fruits among others.
But
the road leading to the community and the farms are in a very deplorable state.
“This
is making it difficult for farmers to cart our goods to the market at the
district capital of Agona Nkwanta. This is sad because Medinya supplies most of
the okro and cocoa we consume in Ahanta West but due o the nature of road they are left
to rot”
The
farmers showed our reporter some of their farm produce that have gotten rotten
because they could not send them to the market on time.
Assembly
member for the area Stephen Quayson indicated the assembly is aware of their
plight.
He
says he has not had any response to the countless letters he has sent to the
assembly for an intervention.
“Since
the administration of the past DCE we have been writing series of letters to
the assembly and I have also written to the assembly since Hon. Henriter was
named as the DCE and am yet to receive a rely but am optimistic that the attention
of Hon. Henriter will to be drawn to the state of our road”
