GBC TO SENSITIZE GHANAIANS ON TV LICENCE FEE

Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has held on its decision to haul defaulter of TV license fee before court to face prosecution.

To this end,  the state broadcaster is prepaid to embark on a sensitization campaign to educate members of the public on the need to pay TV license.

This was contained in a press statement issued by Dr Kwame Akuffo Anof  Ntow, Director General GBC on the 6th of January 2018.

In the press release, the state broadcaster  states it does not take delight in hauling Ghana before court but its object " is to encourage all and sundry to voluntarily pay the TV Licence fee; and not to necessarily haul persons before the law courts for prosecution."

Board and Management of GBC have assured desisting from competing with private media for commercial advertising.

They are optimistic that funds generated from TV license fee will make GBC play an ideal role has a public service broadcaster
as it is poised on providing programs to meet it constitutional mandate of reflecting the economic, cultural  and political aspiration of Ghanaians


PRESS STATEMENT

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation has noted with concern, the public apprehension which has been precipitated by Television Licence fee, its collection and the possibility of prosecution.

The Television Licence fee promulgated under NLCD 89 as amended, requires all owners of Television sets to pay a Licence fee of GHC36.00 per a set and GHC60.00 for two or more for a year. This is regulated under L.I 2216.

• But of critical importance to the Board of GBC is the feedback from the public which it considers rich and informative, to the extent that GBC wants to assure the general public that its primary concern is to encourage all and sundry to voluntarily pay the TV Licence fee; and not to necessarily haul persons before the law courts for prosecution.

• The Board and Management further states that although GBC is mandated to collect the fee by law, a responsibility that would not be reneged on, the Corporation in order to realize that objective would intensify its education and ensure easy access to pay points of the Licence fee.

• Whilst encouraging all to pay the TV Licence fee, it is important to state that GBC as Public Broadcaster, when adequately funded by the public, could be weaned-off commercial advertising, since program diversity and quality should not be driven on the wheels of Commercial concerns.

• The Board and Management wishes to state that like older Public Service Broadcasters such BBC (UK), NHK (JAPAN) and ABC (AUSTRALIA); GBC also carries a constitutional mandate that must reflect the economic, cultural and political aspirations of all Ghanaians. This mandate is reflected in our obligation to cover national events, promote inclusion and drive the nation's developmental effort.

• GBC is, therefore, assuring the public that as critical partners for its success and sustenance, the public is urged to engage the Corporation to ensure that their concerns with respect to GBC's operations are seriously addressed.

At least six persons on board an ambulance truck are feared dead in a gory accident which occurred at Apowa –Beahu stretch of road in   Ahanta West district, western region. Commuters shun Sekondi-Takoradi train shuttle

  A year after the inauguration of the train shuttle service between Sekondi and Takoradi, the Ghana Railway Company (GRC) is yet to break even due to low patronage of the service by commuters.  The GRC is currently operating at a loss and its income is not enough to meet liabilities such as the salaries of workers, fuel and maintenance costs. The service, which is expected to run throughout the day, night and weekends, currently operates only morning and evening sessions between Monday and Friday, with cabins mostly empty or half full. The low patronage has also been attributed to the direction of development of the city, which is heading inland as against the operations of the shuttle which are limited to the coast — from the Takoradi Harbour to Kojokrom, Sekondi. Interestingly, inland areas such as Apowa, Kansawurodu, Anaji, Bu, Kwesimintsim, Ntankoful, Aseike, among others, do not have rail lines incorporated into the planning of the city. Wassa Akropong: Woman 27 years, peppered in the genitalia for shop lifting.

A  27 year old Janet Oteng, has been lynched  by some irate youths of Wassa Akropong of the Amenfi East District for stealing a blue jeans  trouser and pairs of G- String panties from a boutique. Janet Oteng was cought sneaking out of the shop with the panties in her under wear and the jeans trousers in a polythene bag. An eyewitness to the theft triggered an alert when she was pursued to explain how she got the said items from the shop.  She was however unable to provide proof of purchase, a situation which caused some neighbors and the shop operators to strip her cloths off and insert hot pepper, ginger and other hot local spices into her vagina and other parts of the her body. Jane as she’s affectionately called, “claimed to be a hair dresser in Kumasi and she travels to Wassa Akropong on market days to trade”, an eyewitness said. The police later intervened and the suspect was arrested. Investigations are currently underway.
