UNIVERSITY OF MINES AND TECHNOLOGY RENAMED GEORGE GRANT UNIVERSITY OF MINES AND TECHNOLOGY
President Nana Addo Dankwah has announced renaming the University of Mines and' Technology after George Alfred Grant.
He says this is to honor the legendary business man's contribution towards the nation's struggle for political independence.
According to him "it is only fitting that this great modest man who can lay a legitimate claim of being the father of modern Ghanaian nationalist should be properly honoured by a grateful posterity by us. Who are heirs of the freedom he so violently fought for especially by the citizens of this great Western Region"
The decision to name the University after the then Gold Coast bussines Miguel was taken by the University's Council and has the blessing of government.
"Already the decision is before parliament and when parliament complete its' processes University of Mines and Technology will be named George Grant University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa" he said.
His Excellency President Nana Akuffo Addo, made the pronouncements at the Former President John Kuffour's investiture of chancellor which was held at the University's premises on Friday, January 12, 2018.
This makes former president John Agyekum Kufour the first Chancellor of the University.
In his address as the new Chancellor of the University, Former President John Agyekum Kufour pledge UMaT's continuous support to government's in figthing galamsey and sanitising the small-scale mining sector.
" Following Goverment's decision to sanitise small-scale mining sector., UMaT quickly gathered her experts to brain storm how best we could contribute to find solutions to the many challenges facing the small-scale sector."
He added:"already a research led by Prof. Sulemana Al-Hassan of the Mining Engineering Department of this University has resulted in the design and manufacture of "Sika Bukyia", a Direct Smelting Kit, which will be used to recover gold without the use of mercury with a recovery rate of 99%".
Chairman of the University’s Council, Dr. Stephen S. Yirenkyi took his turn to plead to government to allocate to the University funds for completion of its numerous projects.
He says the university has many uncompleted projects which are taken long to be completed.
To this end these uncompleted project have been christened legacy projects.
" l am humbly requesting that His Excellency the President to commit adequate funds for the expansion of the university and also to complete , the uncompleted so called legacy projects on campus which are fast deteriorating" He said.
